Cover, a New App That Automatically Pays Your Restaurant Tab

With Cover, you can dine and dash without getting in trouble.

In the hospitality industry, the least hospitable part of a meal usually comes right at the end, when the check arrives and everyone has to figure out who pays what, and the server has to deal with credit cards. Wouldn’t it be cool if there was an app that let you plug in your card info and preferred tip once, then automatically charges your credit card after your dine? Look no further: Cover is here.

The app, developed by cofounders Mark Egerman and Andrew Cove, lets you dine and dash and not get in trouble for it. Here’s how it works: You download the app, enter your credit card info and preferred tip (which you can change at any time), then let the restaurant know that you’ll be paying with Cover when you arrive. After you’re finished with your meal all you need to do is leave, and the restaurant will automatically charge your card, no questions asked. And if multiple people are dining, it can even be split between them.

Egerman and Cove have so far enlisted 35 of New York City’s top restaurants, including Charlie Bird, Carbone, Empellón Cocina, ZZ’s Clam Bar, Rouge Tomate, and L’Artusi, with more being added weekly (here’s a full list). It’s as simple as it sounds, and not only does it allow you to completely bypass the "check please" portion of the meal, it’s also pretty baller.

Restaurant fixed expenses

Your restaurant&rsquos fixed costs are easier to work into your budget since they rarely change. Here are the fixed costs to budget for:

1. Rent and building fees

While how much you pay per month for your commercial space varies greatly depending on where you&rsquore located and how much square footage you have, the monthly rent and building fees you agree to pay when you sign your commercial lease are unlikely to change.

Before signing a lease, have both an attorney and accountant look it over to find any potential red flags and see whether or not it fits into your set monthly budget.

2. License fees

While most licenses and permits have an initial cost, you may need to renew some of them annually. When you&rsquore deciding which licenses and permits you need, factor in the initial costs and the fixed renewal fees as well.

3. Insurance Coverage

Insurance is an essential part of a functional business, especially for restaurants that want to be fully protected from liabilities. In an atmosphere that sees so many guests, and puts employees at risk for injuries in a busy kitchen full of dangerous equipment, adequate protection is critical. At the minimum, most restaurants will need:

General liability insurance, to protect against everyday accidents and incidents.

  • Product liability, in case any equipment malfunctions and causes injury.
  • Liquor liability, a special policy for restaurants that serve alcohol.
  • Workers&rsquo compensation policies, to keep employees protected in case of injury.
  • Commercial vehicle insurance for any restaurant that offers delivery.

  • Loss of income insurance, a specialty policy that can provide a safety net if something like a fire or robbery forces you to close temporarily.

Insurance will vary based on size, function, and location, but most restaurant start-ups can expect costs of around $6,000 a year. While low-principal plans with high deductibles may seem appealing, be sure you can afford to pay multiple deductibles simultaneously in case something like a kitchen fire resulting from product malfunction closes your restaurant and injures employees.

4. Ongoing marketing

Along with the marketing costs to get your brand up and running, you may want to put a fixed amount aside each month towards ongoing marketing.

Social media ads, influencer marketing, events, PR outreach, you name it. However, you decide to market your business, create a monthly marketing budget and stick to it.

Also, consider amazing customer service as a part of your marketing. Nielson reported that 77% of customers are likely to visit a restaurant that they were recommended by friends and family. If you take care of your customers each and every service, they&rsquore far more likely to keep coming back, write positive reviews online and recommend your restaurant to their entourage.

The best thing you can do to market your restaurant is to focus on customer satisfaction and retention.


Recipe Summary

  • 1 (4 pound) chicken, cut into pieces
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour for coating
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 quarts vegetable oil for frying

Take your cut up chicken pieces and skin them if you prefer. Put the flour in a large plastic bag (let the amount of chicken you are cooking dictate the amount of flour you use). Season the flour with paprika, salt and pepper to taste (paprika helps to brown the chicken).

Dip chicken pieces in buttermilk then, a few at a time, put them in the bag with the flour, seal the bag and shake to coat well. Place the coated chicken on a cookie sheet or tray, and cover with a clean dish towel or waxed paper. LET SIT UNTIL THE FLOUR IS OF A PASTE-LIKE CONSISTENCY. THIS IS CRUCIAL!

Fill a large skillet (cast iron is best) about 1/3 to 1/2 full with vegetable oil. Heat until VERY hot. Put in as many chicken pieces as the skillet can hold. Brown the chicken in HOT oil on both sides. When browned, reduce heat and cover skillet let cook for 30 minutes (the chicken will be cooked through but not crispy). Remove cover, raise heat again and continue to fry until crispy.

Drain the fried chicken on paper towels. Depending on how much chicken you have, you may have to fry in a few shifts. Keep the finished chicken in a slightly warm oven while preparing the rest.

Its a multi-platform cookbook software and is available for Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, and Kindle. It can be used as a social network platform for foodies, where you can share recipes created by you or your favorite recipes with your friends.

In addition to all these, there is already a large collection of recipes pre-loaded here in various categories, like: breakfast, dessert, main dish, salad, sandwich, side, and more.

The Shopping List tool available here lets you add items that you have to buy. Along with items, you can enter amount, brand, and price of the item.

How OpenTable Works for Restaurants

As a diner, when you think about OpenTable, you probably think about the convenience of booking restaurant reservations online (as we hope you do!). However, recent buzz has led some diners to wonder, “Is OpenTable as good for my favorite restaurants as it is for me?” Well, we certainly believe so, and here’s the how and the why.

OpenTable’s most popular product for restaurants is our Electronic Reservation Book, which replaces the traditional pen-and-paper reservation book. Word for iPad is free — for some users

This week’s reader question is a followup to my recent review of the Apple Magic Keyboard for the iPad Pro.

“In today’s review, you talked about replacing your laptop with iPad. I got my first iPad in February and downloaded Microsoft Word. I guess I can use it to open Word documents but have to buy Word to type anything. From what I read, I have to pay a monthly fee for Word for the iPad. When my wife got a Mac years ago, we were able to buy Office and get Word that way for just a one-time purchase price. Can I get that for my iPad and pay one time and avoid the monthly payment?”

With Magic Keyboard, can your iPad now finally replace your laptop?

Well, it depends on what kind of iPad you have.

Microsoft Office apps (Word, Excel and Powerpoint) are free to download on the iOS app store.

You can create, edit, open and print Office documents with your iPad or iPhone, but whether or not you have to pay depends on the size of your iPad’s screen.

If your iPad screen is smaller than 10.1 inches, you can use the Office apps for free. You will need to create a free Microsoft account.

If your iPad screen is larger than that, which includes the latest 10.2-inch iPad and the 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pros, you’ll need a Microsoft 365 subscription to use Office apps for iOS.

You can subscribe for $6.99 per month or $69.99 per year.

With the subscription, you will get premium versions of the apps with more robust features.

You may want to look at other word processing apps for iOS for free or that you can buy outright.

Apple’s Pages is free, and it can open, edit and save Word documents.

I’m partial to iA Writer ($29.99), which isn’t much for formatting, but it does make the act of writing fun and easy by just showing text on a blank page so you can concentrate on your content.

You can also use Google Docs, which is free and includes an online word processor.


A General Liability Policy for Your Business May Cover the Following Claims:

  • Bodily injuries and property damage your business may have caused. This can include customer slip and falls or employee accidents, like breaking a client’s windows while working at their home.
  • Advertising injury that your business causes by defaming someone else or another company.
  • Copyright infringement from using someone else’s work in your business’ ads without their permission.
  • Reputational harm if something you said in an interview about another business owner negatively impacts their company.

Before you install an app, here’s what you can do to better protect your privacy:

  • Use official app stores. To reduce the risk of installing potentially harmful apps, download apps only from official app stores, such as your device’s manufacturer or operating system app store. Also, research the developer before installing an app.
  • Know what information the app will be able to access. Before you download an app, read the app’s privacy policy to see how your data will be used or if your data will be shared. Is the policy vague about how the app will share your data? If it is, or if you’re not comfortable with how your information could be shared, you might want to find another app.
  • Check out the permissions. To gain access to information like your location or contacts or to get access to features like your camera and microphone, apps need your permission. You may be asked to give permission when you first download the app, or at the time the app first tries to access that information or feature. Pay close attention to the permissions the app requests. For example, does it really need to access your location or photos to do its job?
