  • Bring 1 cup of water to a boil.
  • Crush herb leaves and/or flowers, and place them in a dry teapot or use tea bags. To assure potency, use only herbs that are fragrant.
  • Pour boiled water over the crushed herbs or tea bags. Let steep, covered, for the time indicated. (The average time is 10 minutes for a medicinal effect.)
  • If using crushed herbs, place a strainer over the tea cup, and pour. Drink as needed, up to three times a day.

My top 10 Favourite Natural Cold and flu Remedies

Fire Cider

Have you tried this one? Spoiler alert: it tastes bad, but it’s one of the most effective cold remedies I’ve ever tried. It’s a mix of horseradish, garlic, onions, ginger, cayenne and apple cider vinegar, all of which have extremely potent anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties. This remedy is in tincture form, so it’s one of those natural cold remedies that you can keep in your pantry and it lasts a long time. It’s something you could use year round, but it may take some time for you to build a tolerance to the unpalatable taste!

Elderberry

Elderberries are the opposite of fire cider in the taste department, but they are no less effective at dampening colds and flu. They are packed with antioxidants, particularly Vitamin C, and studies show that elderberries can help shorten the duration of colds, and even help air travellers prevent and shorten the length of the common cold.

Chaga and Reishi Mushrooms

You can juice citrus, eat whole oranges or grapefruit, or add slices to hot or cold water. And don’t forget to use the zest – there is a concentration of nutrients in the zest, too.

Rub Vicks VapoRub, or a generic substitute, and rub it unto your chest and back. Okay, first the disclaimer. Don&apost use this product for children under the age of two, and be sure to supervise children under six with it, because it can be poisonous if swallowed. Checking the Vicks website, though, I see that Vicks now has a product for babies called "Baby Rub," suitable for babies, that has the same effect.

That said, this is a great old-fashioned way to loosen up congestion, and sooth your sore throat. How does it work? Well, the active ingredients are menthol, camphor, and eucalyptus oil, all of which are natural ingredients that help to break up a cold. Camphor is also used for muscle ointments, and is responsible for the cooling and then heating effect of Vicks VapoRub.

It’s also said that Cleopatra even used aloe vera in her daily skin regime.
